Documentary is different with other film types and it can be narrative fiction and experimental avant-garde. Documentary can be inspire, ironic and inspirational.Documentaries have four important characteristics. It is base on a topic to illustrate and record. Documentaries are objective and all the narrative are ‘real’ and factual. Also, documentary propose some information and advice.
First of all, subject is on of the important characteristics.It means that most of the documentaries are specific and factual. Also,if focus on the feelings, relationship and action. It frequently concern public more than the private.The second aspect are purpose/viewpoint/approach. The filmmaker record this social and cultural phenomena, in order to inform people about the problem. When people record in front of the camera that means the problem need to solve and people need to do something and take action of the problem. Third, the form of the documentary which is determined by the subject and purpose and approach of the documentary. Documentaries show all the things in shorter in length. Fourth, the production method and the technique are especially important of documentaries. When the filmmaker present the factual information to public in the documentary, the basic requirement is use the real people. It means most of the documentary do not choose to use actors. Through to use the actual image to portrait the problem and event can more truthful.The other are the shooting on location, lighting and sound.
In the class, we leaned some camera angle, for example, high angle , low angle and dutch angle.Photography use different angle refer different meanings. They are very useful for us. Since using different angle have different meaning. We can choose the most suitable angle for our video. Eye level and middle close up are always use in the documentary videos. Since documentary are factual, using eye level angle can make the audience look like seeing them in ‘real’ life. In addition, using eye level can make audience see the subject facial expression clearly.
High Angle
Hight angle is filming in the higher point that make the people weak.
Low Angle
Low angle is filming from lower to high. photography are using low angle, it can make the character look strange and powerful.
Dutch Angle
This angle use in disturbed, thrilling, drunk etc, that make people feel unbalance and slant.
Eye level Angle
Using eye level make the audience feel that the role are talking to them. The audience can feel that they are taking in part of the film.
Middle Close Up
